Harry ‘Lawrence’ Cole, 77, of Dalton passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Lawrence was a proud 1967 graduate of Dalton High School and graduated from The University of Georgia in 1972 in Accounting.
Lawrence was a basketball standout whose name became part of local history. While attending Dalton High School, he became known for his tenacity, showmanship, and unforgettable sense of humor on the court. In one memorable game, with his team sitting at 99 points, he famously took a theatrical bow before sinking the free throw that pushed the scoreboard to 100, an unforgettable moment that perfectly reflected his confidence and larger-than-life personality.
He later scored the first two points ever recorded in the Bandy Gymnasium at Dalton Junior College (now Dalton State College), cementing his place as a local basketball legend.
The same determination, persistence, and spirited personality that defined his athletic career carried him through every chapter of his life. Those qualities made him a respected figure throughout the carpet industry, where he spent decades building lasting relationships and earning the admiration of coworkers. Lawrence worked in many facets of the industry before retiring in January 2024 from Engineered Floors. He spent the majority of his career at Beaulieu of America, where he was known not only for his sharp intellect but also for his quick wit, playful antics, and ability to brighten the workplace.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Chris Vining Cole, and his parents, Jim Franklin Cole and Dorothy Capehart Cole.
He is survived by his children, Jeff (Donna) Cole, Josh (Jen) Cole, Cali Cole (Olin Zmarzly) and Caz (Andrea) Cole; grandchildren, Zac (Stephanie) Cole, Chase, Brett, Maddie and Jack Cole, Lynx and Arlo Zmarzly, and expecting Callan Cole in August; Brothers, Jimmy (Jeanne) Cole and David Cole, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will held at 2 PM on Friday in the chapel of Love Funeral Home. Dr. Jim F. Cole, Jr. will lead the service. The family will receive friends from 12 until 2 on Friday. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.
