Benjamin Whitman Davies

Dec 17, 1954 — Jul 10, 2026

It is with sadness that the family of Benjamin Whitman “Whit” Davies, announce his passing on July 10, 2026 at Regency Park in Dalton. Whit was an accomplished actor, musician, and early computer expert who will be deeply missed by his sons, grandchildren, brothers, extended family, and many friends. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Okinawa as a Morse code interceptor during the Iran Hostage crisis and obtaining the rank of E5 Sergeant with top-secret security clearance.

Whit’s first love was theater: He performed as an actor in stage productions, television, and film, and worked also as a director and theater manager in several locations, including the Dalton Little Theatre, Chattanooga Little Theater, and the Gilmore Art Center in Ellijay. Speaker and author Thomas Goddard wrote, “Whit wasn’t just an actor, director, and writer. He was an artist in every sense of the word. A deep thinker. Brutally loyal. Honest.”

Whit was an accomplished musician and attended Berklee School of Music in Boston but returned to the South within a year. He attended Jacksonville State University where he played saxophone as a Marching Southerner under the renowned director, Dr. David L. Walters. Whit’s love of music, especially jazz, stayed with him throughout his life.

Most important in Whit’s life was family. He adored his three sons and doted on his grandchildren.

A lifelong movie buff, Whit could talk extensively about classic Hollywood films and actors, the more forgotten and obscure the better. In recent years, Whit enjoyed monthly movie nights with his three brothers here in Dalton.

Whit is the son of the late William Bruce Davies and Emily Lillian Hamilton Davies. He is survived by his sons Benjamin Conner Davies (Roxanne), William Whitman Davies (Sarah), and Roy Hamilton Davies (Cricket); grandchildren Lilly Davies Wood, Maggie Davies, Liam Davies, Jack Davies, Pax Davies, Jocelyn Brown, Andrew Sorrentino, Grayson Sorrentino; great grandchildren Levi Brown and Noah Brown. He is also survived by his brothers William Bruce Davies (Kitty), George Hamilton Davies (Bethany), Lane Hunt Davies (Crystal), and extended family.

The family will receive visitors at Love Funeral Home on Sunday, August 2nd, from 2 to 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hamilton Healthcare Foundation.
