Beatrice (Bee) Smith Maybank

Beatrice (Bee) Smith Maybank passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026, in Dalton, Georgia. Bee had a strong faith in God, and a deep love for her family. Bee was born on June 1, 1944, in Asheville, North Carolina, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stacy Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas (Tommy) Huguenin Maybank.

Bee graduated from the St. Genevieve School in Asheville in 1962 then attended Converse College, graduating in 1966. Bee served on the Board of Trustees at Converse for two terms and helped oversee the hiring of their 9th president.

Bee was married to Tommy for 54 years and together they lived in Dalton for over 40 years. They enjoyed traveling and time at their home in Cashiers, NC. She loved spending time with her friends, hiking, playing tennis and bridge. Bee enjoyed attending the Church of the Good Shepard in Cashiers, going to Garden Club, and her morning walking group.

Bee also loved supporting the Dalton Community. She was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and served with the American Cancer Society, the Dalton Heart Ball, and the Boys and Girls Club of North Georgia. For many years she also worked with Meals on Wheels and ringing the bell for The Salvation Army.

We would like to thank all her friends who have helped us along this journey. We especially thank Adrianna Bryant and Jewell Jackson for their committed care and companionship over the last few years.

Bee is survived by her daughter Beverly Burgdorf (Davie) and son Thomas Maybank (Elizabeth), grandchildren Michael and Maybank Burgdorf, and Tad, Margaret and Joe Maybank. She was preceded in death by her brother Frank Smith and niece Stephanie Smith.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Dalton, Sunday September 6, at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall from 2:00-3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark’s Church, 901 W. Emory St., Dalton, GA 30720 or The Beatrice Smith and Thomas H. Maybank Endowed Scholarship at Converse University, 580 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302.
