Carl Griggs, Sr.

Carl Lloyd Griggs, Sr., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Hamilton Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
Carl proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was a local businessman who founded Southern Binders, Inc., in 1956, and Acme Display Company in 1958. He was a board member of the Carpet and Rug Institute.
Carl served his church and community in many ways. He was a founding member of the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, served 28 years as a board member of Hamilton Medical Center, was chairman of the Dalton College Foundation, co-founded the Community SHARE Program, and was involved in many other organizations that served the community.
As a member of First Baptist Church for almost 60 years, Carl faithfully served in many capacities. He taught a men’s Sunday School class for 26 years, was director of the church Training Union, chairman of the Long-Range Planning Committee, and president of the Baptist Men’s Brotherhood. He lived out his faith in Christ as His Lord and Savior in the way he served his family, church, and community.
Carl was a loving husband and devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his entire family and particularly cherished his relationships with his many grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotte Jordan Griggs; his daughter Anne (Dan) Roberts, sons Carl Jr. “Bubba” (Karen), Glynn (Julie), and Mark (Beth); grandchildren David (Chelsea), Steven and Andrew (Linley) Roberts; Katie, Carly, Cara, and Kacie Griggs; Sophia and Olivia Griggs; Audrey (Marcello) Alves, Andrea (Landon) Gray, John Mark (Hannah) and Eric Griggs; and three great-grandchildren, Charlotte Anne and Chandler Roberts, and Markos Alves. Carl is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He particularly enjoyed sharing his birthday with daughter Anne and special niece, Leigh Ellen Griggs.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, William Palmer and Cora Lee Griggs, and siblings Cline (Faye), Florence (Charles) Hamby, Louise (Darrell) Haley, Bill (Mage) and Robert (Marlene).
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Stephen Carson and his staff as well as devoted caregivers Tammy McQuaig and Arthur Hill for their loving and professional care to Carl.
A service to celebrate the life of Carl Griggs will be Wednesday at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Dalton. The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Whitfield Memorial Gardens, with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
