Mr. Frederick L. “Freddie” Pankey, age 75 of Dalton, Ga, passed away on Thursday March 29, 2012 after a long illness surrounded by his family.
He was a loving and dedicated father not only to his four children, but also to the many "kids" he raised. He was a wonderful provider and touched many lives with his words of wisdom and humor. Fred never met a stranger and was always helping those in need.
Fred graduated from Dalton High School in 1956 and played Quarterback for the Catamounts. Fred then served for over 27 years in the Air Force before retiring. He was stationed all over the world and assigned to Strategic Air Command bases in various locales such as Germany, France, Thailand, Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota and even Alaska. After retiring as a Master Sergeant, he settled in Dalton working as a salesman for Sterchi’s, before retiring for the second time with Heilig-Meyers. After his second retirement, he moved to Duluth Georgia to live his final years with his high school sweetheart, Faye Hall.
Fred was preceded in death by his father, Walter F. Pankey Jr; his mother, Alva Williams Pankey; his brothers, Phil Pankey and Doug Pankey and his sister, Caroline Sue Pankey.
He is further survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry Allen and Laura Pankey of Decatur, Ga; his daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Ricky Johnson of Dalton; his fiancé, Faye Hall of Duluth, Ga; Fred was blessed with 8 grandchildren, Zack, Julia, Austin, Luke, Lauren, Madison, Jack and Elijah; siblings, Jan and Buddy Levans of Atlanta, Cindy and Mike Gore, Kentucky, Joe Pankey and Greg Pankey of Fayetteville, and baby sister, Rosemary and Bill Dickey also of Fayetteville; sisters-in-law, Deanna Pankey of Crossville, TN. and Judy Pankey of Gulf Breeze, FL; 18 nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at noon in the Chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Shane Bailey officiating.
Master Sergeant Frederick Pankey will be honored with full military honors presented by the Air Force at West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, GA, for his 27 years of active duty to our country.
The family will receive friends at Love Funeral Home Friday from 5 pm to 8 pm and Saturday from 11 am until the funeral service.
